The Face of Sports

Sports teams have a lot of faces. The players, coaches, staff can all be public facing representatives of a team. But sometimes the beating heart of a team and a city are the mascots. I’ve been in DC a good long while. I’ve been to a lot of sporting events here. The one thing I never really got a chance to do before this year was photograph the mascots of the teams. So getting the chance at our homestands was a real treat.

I spent several years in Los Angeles and always felt a bit homesick for DC. Photographing the Nationals’ Presidents was awesome. That they came to OUR match made me feel really back at home. Alas, I wish I had taken better photos. I might have choked. It’s very difficult to be in all places at all times to take the right photograph. But that’s ok. I was excited. I’ll be ready for next time!

Getting to be face to face with Slapshot while in the crowd with all of you was also amazing. We were all so hyped! I specifically like this photo because of the crowd. The foreground jam-packed around Slapshot, the balcony on their feet. This is the type of energy that follows a mascot. They lead the way for the players and the game. The sound of your cheers with the mascots hyping us all is something I won’t forget. I really hope I can take more photos like these.

Few faces of a team bring as much attention or mean as much to fans. We’ll be back in the stands one day, and I hope to get the mascots back!

Till then, let’s go play some Overwatch!
