The Unexpected
Hidden gems. Sometimes all you need to do is look where you previously didn’t think anything existed. Recently we went over some older photos from the Justice homestands and found some shots that were not given the proper attention. You can see why. Bad lighting, red lights, wonky color… I usually just skip over those. Then I decided to take some time.
Reds challenge me. Surely there couldn’t be good image hiding in this? But yes, there was! Taking the time to really sit with an image pays off. I often mention that I do quick editing because of time constraints. The image NEEDS to be on social NOW! Let’s rethink that approach…
Another image that looks simply too dark and red. Not so! Yes it requires more work in developing, and I could have taken a better image had I adjusted my white balance accordingly. But while shooting we often don’t have that time. You see the moment and just shoot. Yes, most images won’t be great, but look again.
This one really surprised me. Dark, purple, you can’t even seen the hair! A few tweaks and WOW, suddenly the freckles stand out! Adjusting the color was a challenge, some done in the RAW development, some done after in Photoshop. But look at the challenge and consider it a puzzle. You can play with it and find something great.
It’s been a lot of fun doing streams where we look over older photos, we will do more!
The lesson I learned from this is to not throw away an image at first glance. There’s something in there to consider. Look beyond your first opinion. Go back and review. You’ll be happy you did.
Let’s go play some Overwatch!
